IMPLEMENTATION OF BIM IN ABU DHABI – MANDATORY NOW?
In 2019, Abu Dhabi had considered to adopt BIM technology for all construction projects.
According to Louay Dahmash, head of the Middle East subsidiary of US-based Autodesk, countries with nation-wide BIM mandates already benefit from reduced design errors and omissions, improved construction productivity, and reduced construction costs and project delivery timelines, among others.
HERE ARE SOME REASONS WHY BIM
Building Information Modelling is no longer an idea to play around with for a little while. It’s becoming the industry standard. Some huge firms are already in the process of making BIM mandatory for some projects. But several countries are way ahead.
BIM – MANDATE GLOBALLY
UNITED KINGDOM – BIM Level 2 adoption in 2016.
AUSTRALIA – BIM mandate on big infrastructure projects since 2016.
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA – Mandatory at design stage since 2006 for Public Building System.
UNITED ARAB EMIRATES – Mandatory in Dubai from 2013 for big projects, broader since 2015.
FRANCE -Mandatory in 2017.
GERMANY – Pilot projects from 2017 to 2020. Then BIM mandate.
SINGAPORE – Started in 2010. In 2015 mandate e-submission.
• Dubai Municipality issued circular 196 & 207 in 2013 and 2015
• The circular is generic and No reference to any standard
FEBRUARY 2021 – the Department of Urban Planning and municipalities Abu Dhabi conducted a workshop for the Implementation of Building Information Modelling (BIM) in Infrastructure Projects.
One key take away from the workshop is that BIM will be mandated for all Abu Dhabi governmental infrastructure projects independently from size or type. This is to be reviewed by ADM as well as Developers’ infrastructure projects to be handed over to ADM.
Processes and BIM requirements are consistent with ISO 19650 standards and all companies have to ensure their own readiness for all the requirements as there will be no exception for BIM after it is mandated independently from project sizes, stages or disciplines.
BIM will be mandated by ADM for Infrastructure Projects by the second half of 2021.
