EFFECTIVE WAYS TO SAVE WATER AND ELECTRICITY FOR YOUR HOME
There are many improvements that could be made to a house to make it more sustainable. Some of them are immediate and are cheap, while others take longer and are more costly. For new homes, there are so many ways it can be made sustainable.
1. INSTALL LOW-FLUSH TOILETS
Upgrade older cisterns to the more efficient dual flush models. This will produce the most significant water savings. For example a full flush toilet uses about 11 liters per flush compared to a dual flush toilet which can reduce each full flush to 4.5 liters and each half flush to 3 liters. If you have 35 flushes per person per week, this could save up to 210 liters weekly for each person in a household.
Reduce flow rates by installing flow restriction devices inside the shower head.
Reduce tap flow rates by fitting aerators or flow restrictors. Some taps have provision for external aerators while for others such as classic pillar cock taps in line flow restrictors can be fitted.
2. WATER SAVING PLANTS & IRRIGATION SYSTEMS
If the house has a garden, water can be saved with methods such as drip irrigation, tap timers, mulching and water efficient/ native plants.
3. INSTALL DOUBLE-GLAZED WINDOWS
Double glazed windows help to insulate the house, making it cooler during the summer and warmer during the winter.
4. CHOOSE ENERGY EFFICIENT APPLIANCES
Always opt for energy-saving certified appliances, such as energy-star. The star rating is about energy efficiency – that is how efficient a model is relative to other models of the same size.
5. USE ENERGY-SAVING BULBS
Energy saving light bulbs (or energy-efficient light bulbs) last up to 12 times as long as traditional bulbs, using less electricity to emit the same amount of light as a traditional bulb. They’re an energy efficient option, helping you to reduce the carbon footprint of your home
6. INSTALL MONITOR SENSING LIGHTS IN THE ROOM
Monitor sensing lights will help in turning on the lights when a person or people are occupying a room and turn them off when there is no one. This contributes to saving energy costs often associated with wastage when people forget to turn off the lights
